Backwards Film

(2004)

The final scene (the climax): you destroy the idols.  Frozen fingers opening, and in your veins the angels sing of all the forgotten lies I’ve sighed.

Everyone agrees that I’ve relied on you for the oxygen that I still breathe.  You’re warm enough to bear steam into the air, but cold enough still to freeze my heart.  The wind is covering us in centuries of dust and broken glass eyes.

Every time I look you’re moving in rewind, like backwards film or types of bird I hear though my window — the message is unclear.  So speak to me without words tonight, and protect my silver heart, which darkens in the light — the light that moves too fast.

Everyone agrees that you’ve denied of me the happiness that your company affords. I’m strong enough to bear these words into the air, yet weak enough still to fear the truth: the sea is covering us in centuries of rust and the endless images of love.

Every time I try to try again, I remember the texture of your skin, like backwards film or types of bird I hear though my window — the message is unclear.  So speak to me without words tonight, and protect my silver heart, which darkens over time — and time is all we have.
